What we cover

Cardiovascular Health

Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. Most CVDs can be prevented by addressing behavioural risk factors around diet and lifestyle. Research has consistently shown a healthy diet to be the cornerstone of CVD prevention. In this training, your dietitian will show you how various elements of your diet can impact your cardiovascular system. You will compare various diets and explore the health benefits/complications of these diets on heart health. Your dietitian can provide you with advice on how to improve your cardiovascular health, and how the accumulation of small but simple changes can promote longevity.

Diabetes Management

More than 4.9 million people in the UK have diabetes. Research has consistently shown diet and lifestyle interventions can be effective in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. In this training, your dietitian will teach you about the different types of diabetes and how these develop. You will explore the metabolic changes that cause diabetes to develop and how the condition affects general health and wellbeing. You will uncover the complications of diabetes and how poor dietary intake can exacerbate ill-health. Your dietitian will also show you how various dietary changes can help to control blood sugar levels and how effective weight management is key to long-term control.

Basics of a Balanced Diet

What is a balanced diet and how is this defined? When society talks about diet and lifestyle habits, individuals have different perceptions as to what is 'balanced' or 'healthy'. This subjective interpretation is one of the main reasons why there is so much misinformation available on improving diet and nutritional status. Understanding the fundamentals of a balanced diet is key to optimising general health and wellbeing. You will learn about various food groups and how they contribute to bodily functions. You will explore the concepts of macro- and micro-nutrients and how each proponent of food contributes to daily living.

Malnutrition - Identification & Prevention

What is malnutrition and how is it defined? People often assume malnutrition is only experienced by those who are underweight. This is not the case. Malnutrition is prevalent across the world. It affects people of all ages, ethnicity, cultures, sex, and social class. Anyone can experience malnutrition and the associated physical health complications. Your dietitian will teach you about the risk associated with different types of malnutrition and help to identify the contributing factors to this. You will be able to identify populations most at risk of malnutrition and the recommendations for treatment.

FAD Diets & Weight Management

What is a FAD diet and how suitable are these for long-term, sustainable weight loss? With so many diet trends available today, it can be hard to identify which approach is most appropriate. In this training, your dietitian will help you to understand the mechanisms of weight loss and how it is achieved. You will learn the basics of BMR and TEE and how these affect weight management. You will uncover the metabolic adaptations that occur during weight loss and how subtle changes to your diet can help to achieve weight management by increasing satiety and regulating appetite. Your dietitian will also cover body composition, promoting healthy ways to achieve your weight loss goals with a focus on maintaining a positive relationship with food.

Eating Disorders - Identification & Awareness

The prevalence of eating disorders within society continues to grow. Beat (the UK's eating disorder charity) estimates that around 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder. Anyone can develop an eating disorder. They occur from a variety of biological, psychological and social reasons. In this training, your dietitian will cover the different types of eating disorders and how they are diagnosed. You will learn about the signs and symptoms of each eating disorder and how to identify these traits in others. You will explore the physical health complications associated with eating disorders and how these are managed. You will learn about the different types of compensatory behaviours associated with eating disorders and how these can be managed.
