Support with Diabetes Management
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic, lifelong condition, where the body cannot effectively control the levels of glucose (sugar) circulating in the blood. Glucose levels can either become too high (Hyperglycaemia) or too low (Hypoglycaemia), both of which cause serious physical health complications. The condition can become life-threatening if poorly managed or left unattended.
A diagnosis of diabetes is often associated with a 50% increase in premature mortality. In 2019, diabetes was the ninth leading cause of death globally, with an estimated 1.5million deaths being directly caused by diabetes. More than 4.9 million people in the UK have diabetes, with cases expected to rise to 5.5 million by 2030.
Although these statistics are daunting, it's important to note that the risk of premature mortality is largely dependent upon how well the condition is managed. More than half of all diabetes cases, and the serious health complications that come with it, can be delayed or even prevented by making various changes to our diet and lifestyle.
Types of Diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes. They both present the same risks, but onset of the condition is caused by different circumstances.
